Himalayan Kitchen is a Nepalese, Indian and Tibetan restaurant in downtown Durango, Colorado. Make sure to try the cheese naan!

Just in case it's not clear — I love food.

And honestly, I love LOTS of different types of food. But one kind of food holds a special place in my food-loving heart.

A really delicious Indian curry is, in my opinion, possibly one of the best things in life. It's the kind of thing I dream about. It's what I cook in my own kitchen – korma, tikka masala, and saag put me in a happy place.

So when we travel, both my husband and I are always looking for a new favorite Indian restaurant. Sometimes the food is so good that I remember it years later.

That's what happened with Himalayan Kitchen in Durango, Colorado. We visited on a trip to Colorado years and years ago, and on a recent visit, I knew I must go back!

This time, our visit to Durango was the start and end point for a multi-day backpacking trip into the San Juan Mountains. We took the Durango-Silverton train to the trailhead, and it was an amazing experience.

If that sounds like something you're interested in, check out our post on preparing for the backpacking trip and also our Elk Park to Needleton trail guide.

As we hiked, as we ate our freeze-dried meals (which actually were pretty tasty), and as we rode the train back to Durango, I had one thing on my mind — Himalayan Kitchen.

Actually it was two things — Himalayan Kitchen and a hot shower.

We arrived (freshly showered and cleaned up) in downtown Durango ready to eat! We opted for one of the outdoor tables.

Last time we visited, I remembered that the korma was delicious. I also remembered that their cheese naan was out of this world good. So of course I had to order both of those things again.

Our server recommended the Mo-Mo dumplings, explaining that they were a Nepalese and Tibetan style dumpling. We tried them and they were great!

When the rest of our food arrived, it both looked and smelled fantastic.

We had vegetable korma, malai kofta and (of course) the cheese naan.

We ordered our entrées as spicy as they'd make them. (If we came back, I’d ask for it even spicier, but the flavor was fantastic!)

In case you're wondering why the cheese naan is so special here, I'll tell you.

It's cheese and bread, the best combination on the planet. But also, they put the cheese INSIDE the naan, so it's like a little cheesy surprise with every bite.

Next time you're in Durango, Colorado, make sure to stop here and eat! If you prefer, you can order online here.

Other restaurants we loved in Durango included Seasons Rotisserie + Grill and Michel's Corner Crêpes.
