    Root House (Pagosa Springs, CO)

    Published: Nov 14, 2022 · Leave a Comment

Root House in downtown Pagosa Springs, Colorado, is a quaint little coffee shop with delicious brews and both sweet and savory pastries.

This past September, we visited Pagosa Springs, Colorado after a (fairly strenuous) hiking and backpacking trip.

We visited for the same reason many people come to Pagosa Springs– the natural mineral hot springs.

While there are lots of different hot springs to choose from in the area, we opted for The Springs Resort because it had the prettiest hot spring pools I’ve ever seen.

And while we soaked in those hot springs, I had a clear view of the Root House coffee shop. It’s directly across the San Juan River from The Springs, and the cute little coffee shop called to me as I soaked.

    “Come get coffee! Come!”

Since I’m not the type of person who can resist a good cup of coffee, I followed my nose and wandered right across the conveniently placed bridge on the San Juan Riverwalk.

    Finding Root House Coffee Shop

Root House Coffee Shop is located at 445 San Juan Street. Parking was available in their lot when we visited.

    Root House Coffee + Pastries

There was a fairly long line to order when I arrived at Root House, but the line moved quickly.

The good news was, menus were visible both inside and outside the coffee shop, so I had a few moments to think about what I wanted while I waited in line.

Because I’m a creature of habit and almost always order the same unflavored latte, this likely wasn’t a problem anyway. But I always like to pretend that I might order something different!

Once we arrived at the counter to order, I was suddenly confronted with new, tempting options.

    Pastries. Lots of them.

    The Pastry Selection

We opted for a spinach and feta kolache and a spinach tomato feta quiche. In case you’re wondering (like I was) what a kolache is, it’s a Czech pastry that’s become extremely popular in Texas.

Which makes sense, because Root House’s slogan “Southern Roots, Mountain Soul” seems to be referring to Texas. (Not Kentucky or the southeast, as my southeastern self is always inclined to assume.)

    The Shop

As we waited for our coffee and pastries, I had time to browse the shop.

There was, of course, coffee to purchase.

There were also lots of cute, quirky items in the shop.

The kind of things you’d buy as a gift for your outdoorsy friend.

I was especially tempted by the camp cocktail kits and the plethora of outdoor skills tutorial books.

This is the kind of store that could keep me entertained for a very long time.

    The Patio Seating

This coffee shop has both indoor and outdoor seating. We headed to the outdoor patio seating.

When our coffee and pastries were ready, we dug in right away!

    Everything was absolutely delicious.

In fact, the coffee and pastries were so good that we came back a second time!

The maple cinnamon roll was calling us, and we couldn’t resist.

If you’re in Pagosa Springs and want some fantastic coffee and pastries, Root House is the place to go!
