Kaffi Ilmur served us some truly amazing breakfast and coffee! This café is a must-stop in northern Iceland's Akureyri.
We visited Kaffi Ilmur, a coffee shop and cafe in Akureyri, early on a Friday morning and enjoyed an absolutely delicious breakfast with some of the best coffee we’d had since arriving in Iceland!
Akureyri is northern Iceland's largest town and is a lovely walkable area with access to the relaxing Forest Lagoon and several great food and drink destinations. Here are our top things to do in the region.
The coffee shop at Kaffi Ilmur is located in a charming century-old house up a flight of stairs.
There's seating on the ground floor, as well as upstairs, and if you happen to go there on an unusually pleasant day there is also outdoor seating.
What to Try at Kaffi Ilmur
Check the coffee shop website or Facebook for open days and hours. You can expect to find breakfast and lunch offered, with brunch on the weekends, although there can be seasonal closures or changes.
We ordered cafe lattes and they came out quickly in cute oversized mugs.
My husband tried the coffee first, and his eyes lit up. The latte was amazing!
(Not to say we’d had any bad coffee since arriving in Iceland, but this was by far the best we’d had since arriving the previous week.)
For breakfast he ordered an Icelandic waffle with Nutella and whipped cream.
It was our first taste of an Icelandic waffle, and it wasn’t exactly what I was expecting: it didn’t have the crisp edges or deep grooves I’m used to on Belgian-style waffles.
Instead, it was buttery, light, and almost like a cross between a pancake and a waffle. It was absolutely perfect, and I couldn’t help but take more than a few bites of his breakfast!
My bagel with whipped cream cheese, smoked salmon and capers was also fantastic. (And since I’d eaten a good bit of his waffle, I shared my bagel in return!)
Although we didn't try any of their Icelandic cakes, I understand that they're baked on site and are quite the specialty. I can't think of a better place for a coffee and snack break.
Also on the menu are several specialty teas and tisanes, including "Celeste" (lemongrass, chamomile, licorice, lemon verbena, rooibos, orange peel, and sunflower petals) and lots of other delightful-sounding blends.
If you’re visiting Akuyeri, this is a must stop!
