Stop in at Dewster's, a local ice cream shop and bakery in Elizabethtown, Kentucky! You'll find plenty of irresistible desserts.

Elizabethtown, Kentucky, has a lot going for it geographically.
It's an easy drive from the Bourbon Trail. (Indeed, it's only half an hour from some of the distilleries in Bardstown, like Lux Row and Bardstown Bourbon Company with its fabulous restaurant.)
It's also an easy distance to Mammoth Cave National Park and all the attractions in that region.
So when I made plans to visit all of the above destinations in one short road trip, Elizabethtown was a natural home base. And while I was there, I wanted to know what were the best foodie spots.
The top suggestion I found? Dewster's, a homemade ice cream shop and bakery. I headed over there one evening after supper to grab some dessert.
Getting to Dewster's
The bakery and ice cream shop is located on North Mulberry Street, one of the main roads through town.
It's less than a mile off the interstate, and parking is easy.
There's a nice indoor dining area, as well as picnic tables with umbrellas outside.

Browsing for Dessert
One of the first things you'll see when you enter the shop is a board listing off all the ice cream flavors.

(That's if your eye doesn't get immediately caught by the trays of beautiful baked goods all neatly lined up to the right.)

Cheesecake bars, brownies, and decadent slices of pie and cake made for a difficult choice.
In the end I went for Dewster's Kentucky pie, which (as most Kentuckians know) is code for a chocolate, nut and bourbon extravaganza in a buttery, golden crust.
It's a type of pie that gets a lot of attention around the time of the Derby (the first weekend in May), and there are lots of variations on it.
But, thankfully, it doesn't just make an appearance one weekend a year. This is definitely a year-round kind of pie.

I was getting my dessert to go, and the lady who served me told me exactly how many seconds to heat my pie in the microwave for maximum gooey deliciousness. (She was right!)
And what's a piece of chocolate pie without a cup of coffee? Dewster's makes an amazing pour-over, using coffee from another local shop – Arnold's.
