This campfire breakfast sandwich is an easy recipe for a quick morning meal at camp. Use bagels or English muffins, bacon or sausage and your favorite cheese.

Breakfast at a campsite tends to be the most minimal of meals. Sometimes we bring homemade granola or muesli when we need to focus on just getting up and heading out for the day.

But especially on cold mornings, it's really nice to have a campfire going for a little bit, and that means we may as well cook breakfast!

This campfire breakfast sandwich is an easy meal with very few ingredients, and it can also be cooked on a camp stove.

What Kind of Breakfast Meat Should I Use?

This recipe works well with either bacon or sausage, including turkey-based products.

The only thing that you'll need to make adjustments for is whether your pan will be left with enough grease to cook the eggs. If you've used a lean breakfast meat, you'll need to add some oil before you put the eggs in the pan.

When car camping, we store our meat, eggs, and other perishables in our Igloo BMX cooler.

How to Make a Campfire Breakfast Sandwich

Start with a low-burning campfire and a cast-iron pan. Cook the bacon until crispy, and then set the cooked slices aside on a paper towel to drain some of the grease off.

Or, if using pre-cooked sausage, just warm the patties in the pan over the campfire.

If using uncooked sausage patties, check the recommended internal temperature on the label and be sure to cook them through, and then remove them from the pan.

    Cook Bacon Over Low Flame

Next, move the pan further away from the flame so that you're getting only indirect heat.

Make sure the pan is prepped with either added oil or grease from the breakfast meat you just cooked.

You can either fry the eggs, or scramble them before putting them in the pan. Cook to your desired level of doneness.

Remove the eggs from the pan, and add the bagel halves or English muffins to it. Toast each side lightly.

    Toast Bagel Halves

Add a slice of cheese to the bottom half of each bagel and allow it to warm.

On a separate work surface, assemble the sandwiches with breakfast meat and an egg. Serve right away.

    Equipment

    • cast iron pan
    • metal tongs
    • metal spatula
    • heat-resistant glove For handling hot pan
    • cutting board Or another work surface for assembling sandwiches

    Ingredients

    • 8 slices bacon Or use 4 sausage patties
    • 4 eggs
    • Pinch (or two) sea salt
    • 4 bagels Or use English muffins or another bread of choice
    • 4 slices cheese I like to use Swiss or white cheddar

    Instructions

    • For bacon:
Add bacon to pan, arranging in a single layer. Place over campfire with a low flame.
Cook bacon until browned to desired level of crispness, turning occasionally. Remove bacon from pan. (I prefer to set on a paper towel to let the grease drain off slightly.)
      For sausage patties:
If patties are pre-cooked, add to pan and heat over campfire until warmed. If not pre-cooked, heat until cooked through to temperature specified on sausage packaging.
      Remove sausage from pan.

    • Before cooking eggs, move the pan to indirect campfire heat.
If the meat you just cooked was greasy (such as with bacon or pork sausage), you can cook the egg in the grease. Depending on how much grease is left over, you may want to pour out some of the grease before adding the eggs.
If the meat was not greasy (such as pre-cooked turkey sausage), add a little oil to the pan.
For fried eggs, crack the eggs and add to hot pan. Cook to desired doneness. (Alternatively, scramble the eggs and cook to desired doneness.)
      Remove eggs from pan.

    • Separate the bagel halves. Toast inner side of the bread first. When that side is lightly toasted (after about 1 minute), flip the bagel halves. Add a slice of cheese to the bottom half.
Toasting will go quickly: don't allow the bread to burn.
Remove the toasted bagels from the pan.

    • Assemble the sandwiches, adding bacon (or sausage) and an egg to each bagel.
      Serve immediately.

    Notes

Camp stove variation: Follow the campfire directions, but use medium heat for the meat and medium-low for the eggs and bread.
