Looking for ideas for a small space home office? Here's how we fit a standing desk, office chair, and balance board into my tiny work space!
Are you working from home now?
The past few years have up-ended what used to be a normal routine for many of us, and maybe you, like me, are still needing to use part of your home as an office.
I was already partially working from home, but at some point I realized I needed to reassess my home office situation.
Why?
In the past, I wasn't home nearly this much! And although circumstances have eased and I'm now able to get back out backpacking in California, hiking in Arizona, or checking out North Carolina's microbreweries — the truth is, I'm still spending most of my time closer to home.
My old setup wasn't comfortable for long periods of time, and it was hard to be productive when my back hurt, my arms hurt, or I just couldn't sit still any longer.
So we overhauled my little home office space and made this teeny section of our apartment much more usable. After all, ergonomics are important!
Here's what we did.
Small Space Home Office Furniture
First things first, I needed a desk that would let me move more freely.
We opted for this VIVO electric standing desk.
I love it because it goes up and down with the touch of a button, I can preset the heights, and there's even an alarm to remind me to stand up occasionally when I opt to sit.
Guys, I really wanted a white office chair. They seem so chic.
I've been really happy with this Amazon Basics high-back swivel desk chair. It's comfortable, supportive, and it's pretty.
The blog editor on our team opted for the Boss Task Chair and says it's the most comfortable office chair she's ever used, with a thicker than average seat cushion and gently curved mesh back.
Because I intend to stand (not sit) most often at my desk, I knew I'd need some type of anti-fatigue mat. But I wanted one that would be easy to move out of the way when I wanted to sit down.
I opted for this FEZIBO balance board.
This sturdy board has been one of my favorite purchases so far, because it lets me move while I work.
Home Office Accessories
Because I'm spending so much time on the computer now, it seemed like the perfect time to invest in a pair of blue-light blocking glasses.
I bought these FEIYOLD blue light blocking glasses and love them. My eyes definitely feel less strained at the end of the day now!
Are you typing on a laptop all day?
Using a laptop riser will help make that more comfortable, and it won't take up much room on your small space home office desk.
On my laptop, it also makes the camera angle a lot more flattering for all those video conference calls!
I've been using this laptop riser and it's been perfect.
Another home office accessory that I use daily is a cell phone stand.
I actually switch back and forth between two different stands, this small metal Lamicall cell phone stand and a wireless charging cell phone stand.
A cell phone stand is a nice option because it allows you to Facetime or Zoom from your phone without needing to prop your phone up the entire time!
Small Space Lighting Solutions
First of all, I'll say that I happen to be in a remarkably well-lit home office.
But I didn't use to be!
Our last apartment had zero good lighting, and I know a lot of you are in the same situation as I was. Except now you're expected to video conference all the time!
I own this selfie ring light, and it's a great option for a small, portable desk light.
The blog editor loves her gooseneck desk lamp because it's easy to clamp it to any flat surface, and it has light temperature that's adjustable from warm to cool.
