Canaan Valley Resort State Park is a beautiful destination in the mountains of West Virginia, especially for snow lovers and ski enthusiasts.

Canaan Valley is one of West Virginia's largest state parks, with only Watoga and Holly River being bigger.

It's also the oldest ski park in the state. The snow in this sheltered valley can stick around for months.

Interested in checking out this park? Here's what to expect from a winter visit, as well as highlights from the rest of the year. (It's not all about the snow... but yes, it is mainly about the snow!)

First, let's take a look at the lodging options.
Camping + Resort
Nearly all the campground sites include both electric and water (although the water at the sites is turned off from October to April). The shower facilities, laundry, and a camp store are open year-round.
There are just a couple of primitive tent sites in the campground. For something a little cushier or for a group, you can rent a furnished cabin or cottage.
If you're staying at the resort, the lodge includes a restaurant, cafe, bar, outdoor pool, golf course, arcade, and gift shop.

At the lodge, there's also a fitness center with an indoor pool and hot tub. (If you're not staying at the resort you can still pay to come in and use the fitness center.)

Whether you're staying in the campground, a cabin, or at the resort, you'll have access to the resort amenities (an extra fee per day is added to all reservations to cover this).

Canaan Valley State Park in the Winter
There are nearly 50 ski and snowboard runs here, including beginner trails, expert ones, and plenty that are in-between.

You can book your ski or snowboard pass and rentals online.
The Canaan Snowsports School teaches beginners in group or private lessons, which you should really try to reserve ahead of time, as they can be popular.

For skiing newbies, here's a guide to ski gear for beginners, tips on wide calf ski boots if you need them, and 10 things I learned as a new skier.
Bear Paw Ski Lodge has a food court open on the weekends during the ski season for quick bites like sandwiches, soup, pizza, and burgers.

Quenchers Pub is in a separate building behind the ski lodge and offers more variety on the menu, including things like (on the 2025 menu) a mimosa salmon salad, portobello melt, quinoa hummus wrap, and more, besides a bar.
Sometimes in summer, the space outside the pub is used for live music.

Non-skiers can head just across the road to the tubing park and Bald Knob Haus, which is where you pick up tickets, get a safety briefing, and maybe spend some time around the fireplace in between runs.

For anyone wishing to ice skate, there's a covered rink back at the resort lodge. You pay for two-hour sessions with skate rental included. It's not open every day, so check the site.
Occasionally, the Charleston Figure Skating Club will come and put on a show there.

Visiting the Rest of the Year
If you visit outside of ski season, you can still find things to do in Canaan Valley, including several short hikes that range from easy to challenging.

The chair lifts are open during the summer season, so you can head up for scenic views across the valley. Access to one of the trails (Bald Knob) is also at the top of the lift.

You could also go mountain biking, golfing, or try your skills at the sporting clay range.
Touring bikes and helmets can be rented at the Recreation Center.

Fall is a particularly beautiful time to visit Canaan Valley. It's the highest elevation valley of its size in the eastern United States, meaning that slightly cooler temperatures can bring an earlier peak of autumn colors.

What Else Can I Do Near Canaan Valley State Park?
Timberline Mountain and White Grass Ski Touring Center are another couple of snow sports areas only a few minutes away from Canaan Valley.
Timberline is a little pricier than the state park, but also has terrain parks for skiers and snowboarders.
White Grass is mostly for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.
For additional hiking, you might want to head to Dolly Sods, a national wilderness area adjoining Canaan Valley.

Blackwater Falls State Park is also only a few minutes away, with beautiful scenery and trails.
About a 30-minute drive away is Seneca Rocks, a stunning quartzite formation that's part of Monongahela National Forest.
A 3-mile out-and-back trail will bring you to a viewing platform near the top of the Seneca Rocks. Experienced rock climbers or scramblers often venture past this point onto the cliffs themselves.

Spruce Knob, West Virginia's tallest mountain, is about an hour from Canaan Valley and has lots of hiking opportunities.

Overall, this section of West Virginia is rich with scenery and sporting options!
