Turf Tavern is a famous eatery hidden down a small passageway near the heart of Oxford. Enjoy a leisurely mid-day meal or pint here!

Turf Tavern is popular with Oxford students and tourists alike, but as you head down the narrow passageway to get there (especially on an off-season weekday), you might feel like it's your own special discovery.
You'll be in famous company (probably not literally, but who knows?). The tavern has played host to celebrities of all types over the centuries it's been open.

It's a contender for the oldest pub in Oxford, with foundations dating to 1381. Intrigued? Here's a little tour.

How Do I Get to Turf Tavern?
You'll need to walk, but it's not very far off Radcliffe Square. From the square, pass under Hertford Bridge, also known as the "Bridge of Sighs."

Just past the bridge, you'll see signs for St. Helen's Passage and Turf Tavern. Head down this small cobbled alleyway and keep following the signs.

Before too long, you'll arrive at the pub.

When you step inside to take a look at the menu and place your order, do heed the words painted on one of the low overhead beams. "Mind Your Head," or you might find yourself a victim of Old England's quirky architecture.

There are multiple indoor dining spaces — the building stretches back pretty far, so you can just keep moving through the rooms until you find one that suits you.

There's also a walled garden outdoors with lots of seating, right under the shadow of the 13th century New College bell tower.

What's on the Menu?
You can book a table online, but we had no trouble getting a table on a weekday soon after the pub opened.
Find a table first, take note of its number, and then join the line inside to place your order at the bar.
We tried the pea and mint soup, served with warm bread and butter, and it was delicious.

We also ordered a chicken sandwich, which came with a rocket (arugula) and pickled red onion salad and fries.

We completed the meal with a bottle of rose lemonade and a glass of beer. It was a thoroughly enjoyable lunch in beautiful surroundings.

The menu here is pretty varied, with entrées, sandwiches, and salads at reasonable price points. And the atmosphere is mellow and friendly. It's a great stop-off while you're exploring central Oxford!
Looking for breakfast or a coffee break? Try The Vaults & Garden, a café that's just a short walk away on the edge of Radcliffe Square. And if you're on a day trip to nearby Blenheim Palace, consider afternoon tea at The Orangery!
