Here are our top ten things to do in or near Damascus, Virginia, an Appalachian Trail waypoint close to the Virginia-Tennessee border.

Damascus, Virginia, known as Trail Town USA, is located near the Virginia-Tennessee state border, and is a waypoint on seven trails! Most notably, the Virginia Creeper Trail and the Appalachian Trail pass through town.

This town is tiny, but it's Trail Town status means there’s quite a bit to check out! Whether you’re walking, riding or driving through Damascus, Virginia, here are some things to do nearby.

    1. Eat at Wilson’s Café & Grill

We stopped here for lunch and had some of the most delicious shrimp and grits I’ve ever eaten.

My husband loved his smash burger, and the potato salad was delightful. This is a fantastic food option.

    2. Stop In at Damascus Brewery

This tiny local brewery was another highlight of our stop in Damascus.  If you enjoy sour beers, I highly recommend their Honey Mango Sour.

If you’re visiting off-peak season, I recommend confirming their hours by visiting their Instagram page.

    3. Check Out Appalachian Heritage Distillery

This small local distillery offers tasting options for their spirits, as well as malted beverages.

They also host events and are conveniently located downtown.

    4. Visit Local Shops

We stopped in at several outdoor gear shops, and it was nice to see how many small cottage brand items they carried.

    5. Ride on the Virginia Creeper Bike Trail

The Virginia Creeper bike trail is a scenic downhill ride!

Bike rentals and shuttle services are available from Adventure Damascus. They will take you to the top of the trail in Abingdon (more about Abingdon below).

Note that although Damascus used to be the halfway point for the Creeper Trail, as of January 2025 the trail is still partially closed because of damage from Hurricane Helene. The trail is open from Abingdon to Damascus, but the other 17 miles are closed for now. Check here for updates.

    6. Take a Day Trip to Visit the Wild Ponies at Grayson Highlands

This state park is perfect for day hiking and backpacking, and even for winter hiking. The wild ponies are incredibly cute, and although you need to take care not to approach or touch them, you may find some of them come up very close to you!

The park is about 40 minutes from Damascus.

    7. Go for the Appalachian Trail Days Festival

Appalachian Trail Days Festival is held each year in May, and it's a massive event for hiking enthusiasts. Thousands of people visit, including through-hikers, artisans, gear outfitters, musicians, and more.

    8. Visit the Farmers Market

In summer and early fall, you'll find the Damascus Farmers Market in full swing every Saturday morning.

Besides produce, you might see local meat, eggs, baked goods, and crafts for sale, possibly with the addition of some live music while you shop!

    9. Hike The Channels

About a 45-minute drive from Damascus is a nature preserve called The Channels. It's a sandstone maze between huge boulders along the top of Clinch Mountain.

Besides being able to navigate the labyrinth (don't get lost!), you'll also be treated to amazing views from the mountaintop.

To get to The Channels, you can take a 6.6-mile out-and-back section of Brumley Mountain Trail, starting from the parking area on Route 80.

Parking is very limited, so come very early in the day and maybe have a backup hike in mind.

    10. Visit Nearby Abingdon

Abingdon is about a 20-minute drive from Damascus.

While both places have that small-town vibe, Abingdon is larger and therefore has more restaurant options, including a cider taproom and a brewery. It also has a small but vibrant art museum, and is home to the Virginia Highlands Festival in summer.

Abingdon is also a good place to stock up on supplies with its larger grocery stores.

This tri-state area may be far away from any big cities, but that's what makes it an excellent choice for an adventure! I hope you've gotten some ideas for things to do near Damascus. Let me know in the comments what else you find.
