Galax Smokehouse is a barbeque restaurant well worth visiting on a trip to the nearby New River Trail state park in southern Virginia.

Galax Smokehouse is a local barbeque spot in the small town of Galax, Virginia.
We visited on a Friday evening the day before before participating in the New River Trail race.
Here's an overview of what we ordered and what else you might do near Galax!

On the Menu at Galax Smokehouse
They had four sauces available on the table, plus more on demand in the back. My favorite ended up being the “sweet n sassy” sauce, and my husband loved the “Tennessee sweet” the most.

The menu is a pretty traditional offering of barbequed meats and sides.

He got the half rack of ribs, with mac and cheese and smoked mashed potatoes on the side.

I got a combo platter with samples of the dark meat chicken and pulled pork, along with two sides: mashed potatoes and a side salad.

All of the food was delicious, and my husband said the ribs were some of the best he’s ever eaten.
Our server insisted (somewhat jokingly, somewhat seriously) that we had to try the banana pudding, so we obliged. It was indeed phenomenal.

This spot is definitely worth a stop if you’re in the area, especially if you love ribs or smoked meat.

What Can I Do Near Galax?
Sometimes there's live music or a movie at The Rex, which is just across the street from Galax Smokehouse, so it makes for an easy evening out. The restaurant's Facebook page often shares what the theatre events are.
As mentioned above, the New River Trail State Park is close by. It's a linear park following the route of an old railway, and one spur of it begins just outside downtown Galax. It's a great place for walking or biking.
You can also reach the beautiful Blue Ridge Parkway within about 15 minutes of Galax. Managed by the National Park Service, it's a highly scenic journey of over 400 miles through the Appalachian Mountains of Virginia and North Carolina.
I hope you enjoy your time on the rural side of Virginia, especially the local eats!

We stopped there on Memorial Day. It was a great place to, not only to get out of the rain, but to eat. The food was great as always. We shared the banana pudding because it looked pretty big. it was so good, I'm not going share the next one.
