The Funkatorium in Asheville, North Carolina, is known for its excellent range of sour beers. Enjoy a flight alongside some great food options!

Asheville, North Carolina, is home to some pretty quirky and fun destinations. One that comes to mind is the Funkatorium, a taproom that serves up some delicious sour beers (and other types) in its very own beer garden.

Here's what to know if you're exploring beer in Asheville!
How Many Locations Are There?
Besides the Funkatorium in the downtown area, the parent brewing company also has its original Brewpub with a full restaurant about half a mile away. And the current main production brewery and taproom are in West Asheville.
The Funkatorium location is really close to New Belgium Brewing, another great destination if you're interested in tours. About a half-hour south, you can also check out Sierra Nevada.
They had both indoor and outdoor seating at this taproom. We really enjoyed the shady outdoor seating area.

What to Try at Funkatorium
This Asheville brewery features a large variety of local sour beers. They served some of the best sour beer I’ve ever tasted!

Our group tried a few flights, including the barrel-aged flight and the angel flight (made up of fruited sours).

My favorites were the ruido (a smoky blueberry sour), and the angel of darkness (a boysenberry dark sour).
For food we shared poutine (fries with gravy and cheese curds). We also tried the little gem salad and the masala sandwich. Everything was delicious!

The menu has changed since our visit (as has the tap list), so be sure to check the website if you want an idea of current offerings.
This location has a bottle shop on site if you’d like to take any beers home with you. (Not all beers on tap are available in bottles, and likewise not all bottles are available for tasting on tap.)

If you're making a foodie tour of Asheville, I'd recommend a stop at the Funkatorium. And if you specifically love sour beer, bump it up the list higher and consider it a must stop!
