When visiting a new-to-us town, we generally find that heading for a local brewery and restaurant is a perfect option for a casual and laid-back meal.

This has introduced us to winners like Zion Canyon Brewpub (Utah), Sierra Nevada (near Asheville, North Carolina), Braxton Brewing (northern Kentucky), and Raquette River (Adirondacks).

So when we found ourselves west of Detroit near Ypsilanti, Michigan, Arbor Brewing Company sounded like just what we wanted. We actually ended up here twice while staying with friends in the area, and really enjoyed it.

    Arbor Brewing Company Locations

There are currently three locations owned by this brewery. In Ann Arbor you can visit the "Session Room," a taproom and beer garden open for lunch and dinner.

There's also a taproom in Plymouth, which is halfway between Ann Arbor and Detroit.

Corner Brewery, the Ypsilanti taproom we visited actually also serves as the production facility and has already expanded due to its popularity.

There's both indoor and outdoor seating available, and there was even a board game station in the corner of the indoor dining area.

Multiple rows of picnic tables in tree-shaded courtyard.

Both times we visited, there was someone checking IDs at the entrance. That said, it had a very relaxed atmosphere, and was not at all loud or rowdy like some bars. (Kids are allowed in with their parents.)

Pub Food + Beer on Tap

You can order at the bar or from your table using a QR code.

A few of the beers are available year-round (a couple of IPAs, a strawberry blonde ale, and a pilsner).

There are lots more seasonal brews, including ones like cucumber lime gose and honey lavender ale in summer. At any given time, you'll also likely find a couple of hard ciders.

We tried the "Bake Sale," a milk stout, and the "Pollination Sensation," their seasonal honey lavender ale. Both were really enjoyable.

There's a standard menu of pizza, sandwiches and burgers, along with rotating specials and a variety of shareable snacks.

The food we tried was great. We ordered a margherita pizza with a balsamic drizzle and also the Krone Cubano, which was made with a beer mustard. Both were fantastic.

On a different visit, we had the Crispy Brussels Sprouts and the Carnitas Fries, which were also both amazing.

On one visit, our friend tried a salad and found it a little underwhelming, but all of the other dishes were great.

If you get to go, share your beer recommendations in the comments!
