It's been my experience that a really good soup-and-sandwich place (not talking about the big chains!) can be a bit difficult to find. And yet it's such a perfect lunch combination.

So I was very pleased to discover Floating Lotus Kitchen on the outskirts of Lexington, Kentucky. It just opened in mid-2025, and it offers a small, carefully curated menu with wonderful flavors. Here's a glimpse!

    Finding Floating Lotus Kitchen

The cafe is on Old Harrodsburg Road, and it's kind of tucked away on the end of a little shopping center. When I visited, the name wasn't prominently displayed outside, only a tile with the initials "FLK" and a lotus design.

We don't get over to that part of Lexington very often, but it's also home to a cozy brunch place called Tack House Pub. In fact, the two restaurants are both part of South Elkhorn Village, a cluster of shops here on the southwest side of town.

On that day, it seemed like people were primarily just doing takeout from Floating Lotus, so there was plenty of seating.

This is definitely a lunch spot; it closes by mid-to-late afternoon every day (and is closed on Mondays).

Place your order at the counter and browse the baked goodies; then take a seat.

    The Menu

I redeemed an offer from their website for a free drink for first-time visitors, deciding to try a flavored latte. It was probably one of the best I've ever had.

Usually flavored lattes are too sweet for me, but, as the online menu for this place says about their house-made syrups, "No dessert in a cup; just balanced sweetness and natural flavors." I thought they hit the mark perfectly.

I had my latte with black sesame cream and wasn't sure what to expect from it; the server mentioned he had only used it in matcha lattes up until then and promised to remake my drink if I didn't care for it. But it was delicious in my coffee: nutty and only lightly sweetened.

The coffee comes from 4th Level Roasters, a local small-batch provider. Floating Lotus tries to source other things locally as well. They keep their menu small and seasonal.

Both of us that day opted for the lunch combo, which means a half-sandwich and cup of soup (or a small-size salad or bowl).

My turkey gouda jam-wich was amazing. Between the chipotle mayo and the raspberry jam, it was a sweet-savory blend of flavors that I really loved.

My mom went for the pesto caprese half-sandwich, which she enjoyed very much. We both picked the coconut carrot soup, which was beautifully seasoned with ginger and garlic and not a hint of bitterness.

Bear in mind that the menu selections will change somewhat! I highly recommend this spot, and I hope you get a chance to visit soon.
