Lake Eaton in the Adirondacks region of New York is a beautiful spot for camping, kayaking, and sunset views. Here's what to know!

    Sunset over Lake Eaton.

In recent years, we've enjoyed exploring the beautiful and remote spots of upstate New York. The Adirondacks in particular are full of camping and hiking opportunities, and we've only scratched the surface!

Our first trip to the region took us to Rollins Pond and Cranberry Lake. Less than an hour from these sites, we found our next destination: Lake Eaton.

Lake Eaton is near the town of Long Lake. It has a 5-mile shoreline, lots of fish, boat rentals, trails, and a small beach.

Are you researching campsites in the Adirondacks? Here's what to expect at Lake Eaton.

    Getting a Site

You can book your campsite through Reserve America. The campground is open May through October (but check the site for specific dates).

Campsites can be reserved up to nine months in advance.

    Campsite Amenities

The main attraction is the lake!

If you want lake access from your campsite, make sure to book a lakeside spot.

Be aware that some lakeside spots are partial walk-in spots, meaning you may need to park your car at the top of the spot and haul your gear down a few hundred feet. This was the type of spot we had.

We didn’t mind, because the site felt more spacious and private without campsite neighbors right next to us.

Keep in mind that you are camping in bear country, so if you choose a walk-in spot you’ll be walking all of your food gear back and forth to the car multiple times a day.

    Sign about black bear activity.

The campground also has showers, drinkable water and restrooms scattered throughout the property.

Where Can I Get Groceries Near Lake Eaton?

Tupper Lake, which is about a 20-minute drive north, is the closest town with major grocery chains.

There are a couple of small trading post/grocers nearby in the town of Long Lake, but I’d plan on bringing most of my food with me.

    Will I Have Cell Signal?

In September 2023, on Verizon towers, I had around one bar's worth of signal at our campsite.

It was enough to text, but not enough to send or receive photos or check emails.

    Kayaking + Canoeing Options

This campground is perfect for getting on the water! Many of the campsites have lake access.

If you don’t have a boat, there’s a marina that rents kayaks, canoes and stand-up paddle boards.

    Canoe Rentals

If you're new to kayaking, here are some ideas on what gear you need, especially if the water is cold! Things like these NRS Hydroskin 0.5 socks and a neoprene jacket are especially helpful.

Other Things to Do at Lake Eaton

We also enjoyed riding our bikes around the campground.

There are lots of hiking options. We hiked Owls Head Mountain and it had gorgeous views.

    Campfire at night.

About a half-hour drive away is Raquette River Brewing, a brewery that had some delicious beers, as well as food trucks on site.
