This Cherry Chocolate Chip Milkshake is a deliciously easy dessert for one– made with Bing cherries, chocolate chips, and sweet, creamy ice cream!
Growing up, I was NOT a milkshake fan. One taste of those fast food faux-milkshakes, and my nose crinkled in disgust. (And, just to clarify– as a child, I was not a picky eater.) Years later, however, when I started waitressing my way through college– I realized I had never tasted a REAL milkshake– and that they were delicious! This Cherry Chocolate Chip Milkshake is made with just a few ingredients, is easy to make, and is a perfect way to enjoy those amazing summer stone fruits– Bing cherries.
The restaurant I used to work at had a ‘milkshake machine’– basically an immersion blender and a metal cup used to whip together ice cream, syrup, and milk. It was always exciting when someone ordered a milkshake, because the large metal milkshake-maker cup held JUST too much of a shake to fit into the milkshake mug. And that, my friends, meant that I got an itty bitty 2oz milkshake treat! It would’ve been wrong to waste it, right?
Making Cherry Chocolate Chip Milkshakes
More recently, when I had to have dental surgery, I had to stick to an all-liquid diet for a few days. While I was feeling just a little bit sorry for myself, I decided it was– most definitely– milkshake time!
To make a ‘cherry’ milkshake– you need cherries. The easiest thing to use will be frozen, pre-pitted Bing cherries. If you can’t find any, or would rather use fresh cherries, just make sure to pit them before they go in the blender! You can use a cherry pitter, but if– like me– you don’t have one, you can use a chopstick and an empty glass bottle. Pick the stem off the cherry, set it stem-side up on the mouth of a bottle, and push the pointy end of the chopstick through the center of the fruit. (If this doesn’t work for you right away, try flipping the chopstick over and using the wider end.)
Next, add your cherries, a scoop of vanilla ice cream, a small handful of chocolate chips, and a little milk into a blender basin. Keep in mind that the type of milk you use will affect the consistency of your shake– whole milk (or if you’re going all out– whipping cream) will give you a thicker, spoon-worthy shake. Skim or 2% will give you a slightly thinner shake that you can drink with a straw. Use whichever milk you prefer, blend it all up, and enjoy your cool and creamy summer shake!
Cherry Chocolate Chip Milkshake
Quick Summer Dessert
- 6 Bing cherries, pitted (frozen or fresh)
- 1/8 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
- 1/2 cup milk (2% for a drinkable shake, whole for a thick shake)
- 1 scoop vanilla ice cream (~4oz)
Blend all ingredients together, and drink immediately!
