4slices bread of choiceI like Italian loaf or sourdough. Use gluten-free bread if needed.
1tablespoonmilk or water
2slices Swiss or Gruyere cheeseOr use more as desired
4slicesham or turkey (~2 ounces)Or used shaved meat
1tablespoonraspberry jam
1tablespoonoil or butter
honey (optional)
Instructions
Lightly whisk egg and milk (or water) in a bowl. The bowl should be large enough to dip bread in, so a shallow bowl works best.Divide ham or turkey between 2 slices of bread and top with cheese. Add raspberry jam to the remaining slices of bread, then place bread jam-side down onto the meat and cheese, creating sandwiches.
Add oil or butter to a cast iron skillet and place on a hot campfire grate to pre-heat the pan.Dip each of the sandwiches briefly in the egg mixture, then place in skillet.
Cook Monte Cristo sandwiches on one side for about 3 minutes, or until golden. (Timing will vary depending on how hot your pan is.)Flip and cook the other side for about 3 minutes, until golden brown with melted cheese.
Optionally, drizzle with honey. Serve immediately while still hot.
