Materials

  • 1 pound raw kale, stems removed + leaves roughly chopped

Instructions

  • Rinse kale and dry in a salad spinner. Alternatively, lay kale on a towel and pat dry.
Tip: Make sure to completely dry the kale. If you freeze wet kale, the leaves will have ice crystals.
    kale in a salad spinner
  • Lay kale in a single layer on a baking sheet or tray, and freeze for 15-20 minutes until the kale hardens in the freezer.
Tip: You can skip this step if you're in a hurry. Note that your frozen kale will likely stick together in the bag without freezing in a single layer first.
Freeze Tray in a Single Layer
  • Move the kale from the tray into a freezer bag. Push as much kale as you can into a single bag. I can usually fit about ½ a pound of kale into a 1 quart bag.
