This vegan Spicy Chipotle Hummus is ready in 5 minutes, and is perfect for snacks and parties!
What’s your favorite snack food? What do you reach for when the mid-afternoon munchies hit? Fruit? A candy bar? Personally, I tend go for one of two salty options– chips and salsa, or pretzels and hummus. I tend to rotate back and forth between the two easy options, but lately I’ve had to stop and reconsider the store-bought hummus I’ve been buying.
Guys– there have been a lot of pre-made hummus recalls recently. A lot. So many recalls, that I’ve started to feel as if I’m playing Russian Roulette when I pick up a container of pre-made hummus. I won’t lie– I did pick up some pre-made chipotle hummus recently, but it made me nervous. Plus, homemade hummus is SO MUCH BETTER! And it’s easy– incredibly, ridiculously easy. This homemade Spicy Chipotle Hummus is ready in 5 minutes, start to finish, and you can feel good about your snack food as you devour bite after bite.
Making Spicy Chipotle Hummus
To make hummus at home, you’ll need canned chickpeas (these might be labeled garbanzo beans). The chickpeas will probably be right alongside all the other canned beans at your regular grocery store. You’ll also want some tahini– this is sesame seed paste. At my local grocery store, it’s in the ‘health food’ section, but you can also find it with the Middle Eastern food (check the International aisle). The only other ingredient in this hummus that might be unfamiliar is the canned chipotle peppers in adobo sauce. If you aren’t sure where to find these– they’re usually in small 7 ounce cans with the Mexican food. You’ll also need a lime, some olive oil, and a little salt. If you love spice, you can also drizzle a little hot sauce into the hummus.
There really isn’t much to this recipe, simply add all the ingredients into a food processor and blend it all up! If you don’t have a food processor, you can use a blender, but you might have to add more oil or a little water to keep the blender from jamming up. Once it’s blended– taste it! If you think it needs to be hotter, add another pepper or some hot sauce. If it’s a little bland, add more salt. Serve your hummus with pretzels, veggies, or however you want! Smear it on a sandwich, take it to a party, or be crazy and eat it straight. However you eat it, you know that you’re eating a snack that you can feel good about.
