Campfire s'mores are easy and quick to make. Go beyond the basics and try some other variations to make your s'more even tastier!
Did you grow up making s'mores?
For many children over the last hundred years, it's been a cozy tradition around the campfire. For others, the introduction to this sticky treat came much later in life.
If by chance you've never made s'mores before, this tutorial is for you! Campfire s'mores are easy and only take a few minutes to put together. We'll also look at a few variations to add more flavor to your s'more.
What Gear Do I Need for S'mores?
Good news! S'more making requires a minimum of equipment. All you really need is a skewer for roasting the marshmallow and some plates or napkins.
Extendable marshmallow sticks are a great option.
You will, of course, need to have a campfire built. Marshmallows are best roasted over hot coals, so you may want to let the fire diminish a little. With too big of a flame, they're liable to get burned.
Can I Make S'mores Without a Campfire?
It's the toastiness of a fire-roasted marshmallow that makes s'mores so good.
Technically, though, if you don't have a campfire, you could put the marshmallows on a baking sheet and use your oven's broiler to get a similar result.
Want to make other traditional campfire favorites? Try hot chocolate with peanut butter whiskey, hot dogs with peppers and onions, chili, or burgers (with grilled avocado).
Can S'mores Be Gluten Free?
Yes, they can! Just swap in gluten-free graham crackers, and you're good to go.
How to Make Campfire S'mores
Assemble your ingredients: graham crackers, chocolate bars, marshmallows, and any extra toppings you're using.
Optional add-ins could include peanut butter, freeze-dried (or fresh!) strawberries, or banana chips.
I like to put all of it in a basket and then let people rummage through and decide what type to make for themselves.
Break a graham cracker into two squares. On top of one of the squares, place a square of chocolate and, optionally, fruit or peanut butter.
Next, place one or two marshmallows on a skewer, and roast them over indirect heat.
Ideally, the marshmallow will be golden on all sides, but it can take some practice to get a consistent level of browning!
Once your marshmallow is ready, slide it off the skewer onto a graham cracker square.
To keep fingers away from the hot surface of the marshmallow, I like to lay the skewered marshmallow on top of the graham cracker/chocolate base, place the other graham cracker on top, and then pull the whole thing away from the skewer.
The marshmallow will begin to just slightly melt the chocolate. Yum! Enjoy right away, and see if you're tempted to have – ahem – s'more!
